Julia Cassels
Julia Cassels was born in 1964 and received her early training as a painter in watercolours from her father (also an artist). Julia spent the early part of her career working in graphic design, before moving on to advertising and PR.  At the age of 21, she was given the opportunity to work with the Maasai in the heart of Kenya’s Rift Valley, and since then she has never looked back.  Having painted since a child, she was immediately captivated by the rhythms, shapes and rich colours of Africa.  Her paintings reflect her fascination with light and movement to create a sense of vitality and energy for which she is now well known.  Although Julia specialises in watercolour, she can make use of mixed media and the fluid brevity of line to convey the lively and immediate impression she seeks.
 
Her travels with a paintbrush took her to many countries across Europe and Central America, before setting off in a Land Rover to drive the old Silk Route from England to Nepal with Philip, now her husband.  They then moved to work in Zambia and then Tanzania for ten years.  Julia now paints from her studio in Hampshire.

 

Of her work, she has written: “I strive to capture the line of movement together with a brevity of colour and shape to create a sense of spontaneity.  In other words, to use whatever is necessary – whether it is a line, mark, dab of colour, a shadow, to convey that fleeting moment….”
